Every Wednesday through Saturday in July and August
Live! On the Lawn Theatre brings to life celebrated Arctic explorer, Captain Bob Bartlett and historic Brigus. Performed by members of The Baccalieu Players, each of the four 20-minute theatrical vignettes takes place once week.

  • "Emma Remembers" - Captain Bob Bartlett's sister reminisces about life in Brigus and her brother's famous voyages with Stefansson, Peary and other polar heroes.
  • "27 Hands to Greenland!" - Fred Littleton recounts his experiences as a deck hand with Captain Bartlett on the Effie M. Morrissey during the 1940 West Greenland Expedition.
  • "All In a Day's Work" - The story of Florence Morgan, the Bartlett family maid, with her insights on daily life at Hawthorne cottage, and the antics of two of Captain Bob’s young relatives.
  • "The Karluk Disaster" – Ernest Chafe recalls Bartlett's heroism during "the greatest Arctic disaster since the Franklin Expedition."

July 9 Servant of Two Masters - Beni Malone & Wonderbolt Productions A classic Commedia del’arte piece written by renowned Italian playwright Carlos Goldini and adapted for stage by Beni Malone of Wonderbolt Productions. Audiences will be treated to a tapestry of memorable characters, beautiful costumes, manic comic energy as they whirl at a break neck pace through the ever twisting and twirling plot that is the trademark of the commedia del’arte form. July 13 Christy Georg - Artist in Resident at Landfall
A Workshop on Knot Tying. You will learn how to tie a Monkey's Fist throwing knot.

About Christy - Christy's most recent work is called Nautical Body, and is influenced by the oceans. She has crewed on the Effie M. Morrissey, Captain Bob's schooner. Christy has taken the practical techniques of knot tying and raised them to an artform.

July 31 400 Storytelling Concert Guest storytellers from around the world and at home will gather at St. George's Heritage Church in neighbouring Brigus. International storytellers, Graham Langley and Jan Andrews will be joined by Newfoundland storyteller Margaret Hitchens for an evening of traditional English folk and fairy tales. August 3 Felting with Pearl Fifield
This workshop will allow you to learn the basic techniques, and create a small piece of your own. If time permits we can also work on a communal piece.

Registration limited to 20 people, ages 10 and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
August 3rd. 2:00 - 4:00 pm.
Cost: $25.00 includes materials and admission to Hawthorne Cottage.

About Pearl - Felting is fun for all ages. Pearl has taught Artsmart programs, and taught at the Anna Templeton Centre.

August 22.The Hooked Mats of Hawthorne Cottage with Margaret Angel

Registration is limited to 12 people

Bring: Some colourful used tee shirts, scissors.
Cost: $65.00 - includes lunch and admission to Hawthorne Cottage

About Margaret - The traditional hooked mats of outport Newfoundland were a thrifty way to use worn articles of clothing to create practical mats and chair pads. The women indulged their love of beauty by creating designs of flowers, animals, and intricate borders. Margaret Angel, a direct descendant of the Bartlett family, is an experienced mat hooker who has extensive knowledge of the hooked mats at Hawthorne Cottage. You will be able to examine the mats, design and start a small piece reflecting features from the cottage collection and learn some rug hooking techniques.

Frames and hooks will be available for use, or bring your own.
